|My 5th Tour...|
|“Then he (David) took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.”|
1 Samuel 17:40.
We all know the story of David and Goliath: The Little Man vs. the Big Man. The Underdog vs. the Favorite. The Weak vs. the Strong. And we remember that David’s courage and “come-from-behind” victory did away with the Giant who had been terrifying and terrorizing David’s people, and secured their independence and freedom.
Many who suffer from Arthritis might well liken the disease that plagues them as the Giant Goliath. But giants, terrifying and intimidating as they are, don’t always win.
David was encouraged to try the conventional way – to put on a coat of armor and bronze helmet. But he refused to approach Goliath in this manner, for he was “not used to them.” Instead, he offered the best of his unique self, used the gifts that he had as a slinger (learned and developed in-the-field and on-the-job as a shepherd), and chose from the stream five smooth stones.
And it was with those five smooth stones that he slew the Giant.
This will be my fifth tour of the California Coast Classic. I’m only one person, but even as David had the power of the LORD God behind him, I’ll be joined by 200+ riders for this common mission. And I hope to be supported by as many partners in this fight against the Giant we call Arthritis.
